Barcelona Cathedral!

Our Second morning from our Barcelona Vacation!

We walked through old town on the way to the beach. There was lots of shopping, old streets, and the Barcelona Cathedral! The old town of Barcelona, also called Ciutat Vella, is composed by 4 main zones: El Raval, Gothic Quarter, La Barceloneta and La Ribera.

Elections were the day before so we knew in the morning that Obama was our president again by the Spanish newspapers on the counter of the hotel lobby!

This Shop was right by our hotel! Hilarious! Spanish Style!

Barcelona Hard Rock Cafe!

We walked down some of the shopping streets on the way to the Cathedral! El Portal del Angel is primarily a shopping street where you’ll find big stores of famous brands. This street is always full of people and makes its way through other small commercial streets Portaferrisa or carrer de la Boqueria.

The Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia also known as the Barcelona Cathedral is the Gothic cathedral and seat of the Archbishop of Barcelona.

The Cathedral was constructed through the 13th to 15th centuries. The main cloister which encloses the Well of the Geese was completed in 1450. The neo-Gothic façade was constructed over the nondescript exterior that was common to Catalan churches. The roof is notable for its gargoyles, featuring a wide range of animals, both domestic and mythical.

The cathedral was constructed over the crypt of a former Visigothic chapel, dedicated to Saint James, which was the proprietary church of the Viscounts of Barcelona, one of whom, Mir Geribert, sold the site to Bishop Guislebert in 1058. Its site faced the Roman forum of Barcelona.

It is a hall church, vaulted over five aisles, the outer two divided into chapels. The transept is truncated. The east end is a chevet of nine radiating chapels connected by an ambulatory. The high altar is raised, allowing a clear view into the crypt.
