Next Stop Salzburg, Austria! Home to Mozart, The Sound of Music, and Red Bull! One of the most beautiful cities I've ever seen!
We stayed at Hotel Villa Carlton an it was another great find!
Newly renovated rooms and I liked their logo of the goat! :)
Started our journey with a walk toward the Mirabell Gardens and Palace!
The Mirabell Palace the white building to the left was built in 1606. Rebuilt in 1721 in a lavish baroque style.
The Mirabellgarten was laid out under Prince-Archbishop Johann Ernst von Thun from 1687 according to plans designed by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. In its geometrically-arranged gardens are mythology-themed statues dating from 1730 and four groups of sculpture (Aeneas, Hercules, Paris and Pluto), created by Italian sculptor Ottavio Mosto from 1690.
Several scenes from The Sound of Music were filmed here. Maria and the children sing 'Do-Re-Mi' while dancing around the horse fountain and using the steps as a musical scale.
The Salzach River.
Love locks.
Loved the beautiful and ornate Guild Signs of Salzburg. As if the city itself is not charming enough, these wrought iron works of art send Salzburg over the top.The practice of creating descriptive and elaborate signs outside of businesses began in the Middle Ages.
We of course had to try the original Mozartkugel that is only sold at 1 place in Salzburg. A Mozartkugel is a small, round confection made of marzipan, nougat and dark chocolate. It was originally known as the “Mozartbonbon”, and was created by Salzburg confectioner Paul Fürst in 1890 and named after Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. There are many copy cats in Salzburg.
When imitation products began to appear, Fürst initiated a court process to secure a trademark. At first, the dispute concerned only confectionery producers in Salzburg, but later spread to include the competition from Germany. The result was an agreement which obliged Fürst’s competitors to use other names. The Mirabell firm, based in Grodig near Salzburg, chose the name, “Real Salzburg Mozartkugeln”. The Bavarian producer, Reber, opted for “Real Reber Mozartkugeln”. In 1996, a dispute between Fürst and a subsidiary of the Swiss food producer, Nestlé, which wanted to market “Original Austria Mozartkugeln”, was decided in the third instance. Only Fürst's products may be called "Original Salzburg Mozartkugeln"
Mozarts hang out! Founded in 1703, the Tomaselli on Alter Markt Square is the T-Rex in the Jurassic Park of Caffeine. The man himself, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, had coffee there and so did generations of local and international artists such as Max Reinhardt, Michael Haydn or Hugo von Hoffmannsthal. The classy interiors are worth a visit and so is the coffee.
We went on a hike to see Blue Hour during the perfect time in the perfect spot!
Hohensalzburg Castle sits atop the Festungsberg, a small hill. It is one of the largest medieval castles in Europe.
Beautiful part of the world to see and experience with Mom & Dad!
We probably didn't stay late enough but this was the start of twilight. The city of Salzburg is turned blue and gold during a winter twilight. This magical moment during twilight is a photographer's dream. The reason the hue is so overwhelmingly blue is because the Earth's pre-sunrise and post-sunset atmosphere only receives and scatters the sun's shorter blue wavelengths.
Salzburg Selfie!
Mozarts Crib!
Our moon! Good night moon!
Traditional Austrian food for dinner!
Traditional Weisswurst (white sausage) is very good with the sweet mustard and pretzel!
My favorite thing to get in Austria, Kürbiscremesuppe (pumpkin soup)! mmmm
Mom got the cheesy Spätzle.
Meat and dumpling for Dad!
Traditional Salzburg Dessert- Salzburg Notkerl- it tasted like cake batter. The sweet dumplings are made of egg yolk, flour, sugar, and vanilla, mixed into a thin dough. Then egg white is whisked until it is stiff and mixed carefully with the dough. Afterwards dumplings are formed and baked on low heat in an oven. sprinkled with powder sugar (to represent the surrounding snow peaked mountains of Salzburg) and raspberry sauce.
Good night Salzburg!
My favorite type of coffee from this region is Julius Meinl (its what they serve in Bruneck too). Julius Meinl opened his shop in 1862 in Vienna Austria. known as "the best coffee roaster in the Austrian Empire". Opened first coffee house in the USA in 2002 located in Chicago.
On our way back to Italy we stopped in Innsbruck to take this beautiful pictures of the mountain tops!
Ciao Austria!
peace & love,
