Kanaal, Amsterdam!

Pretty pictures of the canals of Amsterdam!
We received a free boat tour with the Heineken museum tour! Will be posting about that tomorrow! The history of Amsterdam is intimately connected with water. Its 165 canals were created over the centuries to stimulate trade and transport and reclaim land to expand the city. They continue define the city’s landscape and in 2010 Amsterdam's canal ring was recognized as a UNESCO world heritage site. A canal tour is definitely something you should do when going to Amsterdam. A few of the best-known cruise operators include Holland International, Canal Company, Blue Boat, Rederij Kooij, Rederij Plas and Lovers. Amsterdam, capital of the Netherlands, has been called the "Venice of the North" for its more than one hundred kilometres of canals, about 90 islands and 1,500 bridges. The three main canals, Herengracht, Prinsengracht, and Keizersgracht, dug in the 17th century during the Dutch Golden Age, form concentric belts around the city, known as the Grachtengordel.

Since its opening in 1867, the InterContinental Amstel Hotel in Amsterdam has been the most prestigious hotel in town and probably in the whole Netherlands. Today it comes across as beautiful and luxurious, quietly standing at the bank of the Amstel river, with a small square behind, Professor Tulpplein Square. Its interior is full of Italian marble, warm in colors, plushy and formal.

Dutch Word of the Day:
Brug meaning Bridge
